Legit Binary Options Review - Binary Options Trading

Canada’s Binary Options Problem

Canada’s recurring binary options problem

Approximately seven months ago the Canadian financial regulatory authorities enacted a ban on brokers offering binary options to all retail traders. Unfortunately, these actions seemed to have had little to no results on certain brokers that have implemented new tactics in order to gather money from unsuspecting investors.
On April 12th the Investment Industry Regulatory Organization of Canada, more commonly referred to the IIROC cautioned Canadian traders not to be duped by fraudulent online trading brokers attempting to unlawfully sell binary options under the pretense of legitimate brokers regulated by the IIROC.

Binary options scams still exist

Recently the ombudsman has been made aware of at least two brokers that misleadingly state that they are regulated by IIROC:

Binary options cannot be offered or sold to retail traders in Canada and the regulator has issued plenty of warnings, imploring Canadian citizens not to invest in these fraudulent companies. Under no circumstances are IIROC regulated entities authorized to sell binary options to retail investors in Canada.
This troubling tendency is bringing up concerns about how effective a blanket ban on offering of such toxic products as binaries to stop scams. ESMA, the European Securities and Markets Authority has recently put in rules that prohibit regulated brokers from offering binary options to retail investors. However, these recent developments in Canada call into question on whether a ban in Europe would, in fact, produce the wanted effect.

Opposition to the binary options ban

It should be noted that when the Canadian regulatory authorities first suggested to ban binary options, the proposal encountered stern opposition. The Investment Industry Association of Canada (IIAC), which represents 130 Dealer Member firms regulated by IIROC, asserted that the injunction should only include binary options scams offered by unregulated binary options brokers. The IIAC further maintained that its members should be allowed to offer binary options to retail traders.
Interestingly enough there have been proposals to allow trading binary options on an exchange, as this is allowed in the United States. However, opposed to that line of thinking are organizations such as the Canadian Advocacy Council for Canadian CFA Institute Societies (CAC), which heavily supported the binary options ban proposal and even went beyond it by questioning the status of OTC (Over the Counter) or more commonly known as retail Forex trading. The council questioned whether the sale of similar financial instruments to retail investors should additionally be restricted.

Binary Options Recovery Scams – The New Villain

Scamming those who have been scammed! So-called recovery experts are scamming those who lost money to online trading scams.

Many individuals who have come across Broker Complaint Registry will, unfortunately, be accustomed to a whole gamut of fraudulent binary options and forex brokers that made up a large swath of the online trading industry. From fixing trades, denying withdrawals and enabling horrible trades, numerous brokers made millions conning innocent people of their hard-earned money.
Because of these aforementioned reasons, a number of regulatory authorities across the globe have now barred the sale of binary options to retail traders. Just a few weeks ago, for example, the European Securities and Markets Authority (ESMA) proclaimed that it would be extending its binary options ban for an additional three months.
These sanctions may stop traders from being conned in the future but for those who have already lost their funds, it only provides minor solace. In fact, getting funds back from con-artists, who are almost completely anonymous, has been a challenge for most binary options other online trading scam victims.

Scam Recovery Service – The New Villain

Unfortunately a new sort of scammer – the so-called ‘recovery expert’ has come onto the scene. They specifically prey on those scam victims and often convince them to part with even more of their money and – they’re pretty good at it.
Finding these recovery scam-artists is not too difficult. Just take a look at the comments section of any news article pertaining to forex or binary options trading and you are likely to find a number of posts with the form of the following message: I lost a ton of money trading binary options with ‘xyz’ company, thankfully company X recovered my money for me – just email company X here to find out more.
Here at Broker Complaint Registry, we have discovered a number of fake recovery websites with the same layout: phony office addresses, fake US phone numbers, no license or regulation and no clear indication as to who actually works or runs the company.
One of these companies, Finance Fraud Recovery has a number of positive reviews dating back to May 2017 when in fact they only came into existence approximately one month ago. These are the type of scams victims are facing after they have already been scammed once.
Another website, Optionsrefund, lists its address as being in Christchurch, New Zealand and provides users with a US contact number. The site, however, was registered in Canada and the person that set it up did not provide any name or contact information. Trying to figure out who runs these sites is challenging but, in a number of cases, we can certainly tell that they are not based where they claim.

Beware of those non-regulated fund recovery services

The online trading industry is fraught with non-regulated brokers such as Greenfields Capital to KayaFX masking to be legitimate financial service providers. The same stunt is being pulled in the fund recovery industry. These companies dupe their hapless clientele by claiming to have incriminatory intel against these scam brokers and charge an upfront fee in order to get the case off the ground require up-front, with the minimal likelihood of ever seeing that money again. Remember it is not the initial payment that is problematic as almost all legitimate companies in any industry require some sort of a down payment. This is especially true in the fund recovery business as it is not a given that they will be able to recover the money as there are so many mitigating factors that go into each and every case.
A number of these fake recovery companies even offer state of the art hacking services. Take Binary Options Recovery Specialist, their hacking services include password recovery and credit score editing in addition to their binary options recovery resources. Anyone who wants to utilize any of their services must also pay in some form of cryptocurrency – making it practically impossible to determine where the money is actually being sent.

How can this be prevented?

There is one predominant factor that is driving these scam websites. Those that have lost money from binary options and other online trading scams are generally desperate. These are not multi-billionaires or millionaires who can stand to lose a few hundred thousand dollars or pounds but regular individuals who probably forfeited their whole life savings.
Anyone in that unfortunate situation is almost always desperate for assistance especially when the regulators and other authorities are often at loss as to how to take down these scammers as they are often located offshore. This is where the recovery scam artists come in as they claim they have the necessary capabilities to pursue these binary options and forex brokers.
Preventing such people from operating seems like a Herculean task. Those that own the sites are often difficult to find and, as soon one is shut down, another pops up somewhere else along with a recovery firm targeting those victims. However what you can do is alert us at the Broker Complaint Registry, the financial ombudsman, your banks, social media and everyone in between. Additionally, when you submit a complaint to us we will review it and put you in touch with a regulated fund recovery service or lawyer that specializes in financial fraud.

Listed below are seven scam recovery companies that we have received complaints against. If you have fallen victim to a cryptocurrency scam, send a complaint to at [[email protected]](mailto:[email protected]), and we will do our very best to get into contact with you as soon as we can to initiate your funds recovery process.

BTC Global – A Huge Ponzi Scheme

Oh No! Another Cryptocurrency Scam

Since Bitcoin was created back in 2008, there have been numerous shady individuals and companies for that matter that have used the hype to their advantage to facilitate cryptocurrency scams. These shrewd schemes conned thousands upon thousands of people who knew virtually nothing about cryptocurrency but wanted to invest in this alluring venture. 2018 is underway but here is this year’s top cryptocurrency scam thus far:

BTC Global

Just a little over two weeks ago BTC Global collapsed and Broker Complaint Registry has received numerous complaints pertaining to this fraudulent broker. The company claimed to be an exclusive platform providing unparalleled earnings through valid binary trading services, but that was unfortunately not the case. Here are excerpts from there website:
“We are backed by our founding trader at Steven Twain.”
This “Steven Twain” character is not a real individual.
“Steven has 6 years of experience trading binary options with consistent success, over the last 3 years he has started providing trading services for other large account holders ($10,000+ only).”
I have not come across any trading history pertaining to Steven Twain.
“Through our partnership with Steven, BTC Global have secured access to guaranteed 14% WEEKLY returns from as little as $1,000 in your account. We have also secured extra returns to pay out as referral commissions should you decide to share this opportunity with others! There are very few legitimate opportunities to get the kind of returns on investment BTC Global is offering so we encourage you to get involved as soon as possible to avoid disappointment.”
How can a legitimate company guarantee any sort of returns?
In BTC Global there were two ways one could earn:

  1. Return on investment, which was 14% of the dollar amount that was invested, paid weekly in BTC.
  2. Team shares or commissions on the people that the investor recruited or referred (think of a pyramid scheme).

BTC Global – a textbook Ponzi scheme.

The definition of a Ponzi scheme is as follows:
A deceitful investing scam guaranteeing high rates of return with little to no risk to investors. The Ponzi scheme produces returns for earlier investors by procuring new investors. BTC Global certainly fits the bill
Investment values generally go up and down over a duration of time, especially the ones that offer potentially high yields. If an investment consistently generates the same returns despite the market conditions or guarantees these high returns that is cause for pause.
Additionally, Ponzi schemes usually involve investments that have not been registered with the SEC, FSB or any other regulatory agency. Obviously, registration is pivotal as enables investors to access pivotal information pertaining to the firm’s management, services, products and most importantly finances.
Lastly and most importantly if you do not receive a “scheduled” payment or incur difficulty when trying to cash out your investment that is the biggest red flag. Those who promote Ponzi schemes regularly ask investors to “roll over” investments and often promise returns in excess of the amount that was rolled over.

How to protect yourself from a cryptocurrency scam

Although we have just talked about the BTC Global scam, this is not the only one. The very best way to ensure your funds are safe is to know how to identify and avoid ponzi schemes like BTC Global.
Stay far away from ICOs, unidentified companies and companies that do not provide suitable information. Be sure that creator’s names and all team members are publicly listed and verified and, if reviews give consistent negative feedback it best to avoid that cryptocurrency broker.
If you have fallen victim to a cryptocurrency scam, send a complaint to at [[email protected]](mailto:[email protected]), and we will do our very best to get into contact with you as soon as we can to initiate your funds recovery process.

How to avoid a forex scam

Forex Trading – Is It Legitimate?

Forex (Foreign Exchange) is not a scam and certainly can be a credible and legitimate way of making money. However, whenever there are large sums of money involved, the shadier elements of society are never lagging. There are plenty of nefarious brokers that target novices, experienced traders and everyone else in between.
Forex scams are unfortunately common. At Broker Complaint Registry we have seen many forex, binary options and CFD scams emerge. Here are a couple of things to look out for whether you are an experienced trader or a complete novice.

Regulated Forex Broker?

The very first step to take to avoid becoming a victim of a Forex scam is to make sure you open an account with a regulated broker. There are many dominions that regulate Forex trading including the FCA in the UK, ASIC in Australia, and the CFTC and the NFA in the United States. Do not solely rely what is on the broker’s website. Check them out online and make sure they are regulated. It is simple to place a regulation on a website so use the resources available to you such as https://register.fca.org.uk/. Be sure to call the forex broker and find out who they are and what they do. Do not get pressured into opening an account unless you are 100% at ease.
However, merely checking to see whether the broker is regulated is not enough. There are numerous regulatory agencies such as CySEC that do not apply strict enough oversight and fail to implement harsh penalties for any brokers that violate their rules.

Guaranteed ROI

Any broker that guarantees a return on investment (ROI) is a surefire scam. For example, a “broker” may be approached to invest your money with an organization that will trade on your behalf and promise yearly or monthly returns for as long as you keep investing with them. Many of these con artists promise 40-50 % of your invested capital guaranteed PER MONTH. These “returns” are absolutely unsustainable and almost always involve other investors continuing to add money to the pot. This is called a Ponzi scheme. Remember Bernie Madoff anyone?
Forex trading is risky and while there are plenty of individuals who can consistently earn money trading, no one will say it is a guarantee.

Fund Withdrawal

If the forex broker or account manager tries to prevent you from withdrawing your funds or your return on investment, then you know that it is a forex scam. There is absolutely no reason that it should take anymore than a few business days for your money to be returned. Even some regulated brokers have refused to allow their clientele to withdraw. Take OTCapital as an example. They are regulated by ASIC, but Broker Complaint Registry has dealt with numerous individuals that have been unable to withdraw their funds.

Sympathy for the Drow - De-Vilifying the Dark Elves

The "Evil" races in DnD have always rubbed me kinda the wrong way. Partly once I learned that a lot of them come from racist stereotypes (Orcs, Drow, and Goblins in particular) and also just because it doesn't make sense to me. Even Nazi Germany had variation and dissenters and it only lasted for 12 years. Why would a clearly evil society never change over hundreds of years? In my opinion, a story is only as good as it's villains. So, I've set out to try and make the traditionally evil races slightly more believable and even sympathetic in places.
Now, I've not been a DM very long, only like three years. But the first campaign I ever ran was through Curse of Strahd which paints the Vistani (an itinerant society heavily based on the real world Romani) as a conniving group of thieves, murders, and vampire-worshipers. Thankfully, I found through reddit and other sites how to steer away from the racists depictions of the Vistani and making them seem like, at worst, opportunists. So, I hope to be able to do that with some other of the classic DnD antagonist races.
I've read some other phenomenal post on here about evil races that totally inspired me as well. There's a great two part post about Decolonizing D&D which I adore. The post about alignment is easily my favorite. There's a couple great ones on Orcs and Yuan-Ti too so if some of my ideas are lifted from them, I hope y'all consider it flattery instead of theft. So, here are some primer notes before I get into it.
For creating the Dark Elves, I tried to keep as much as I could from the books. Obviously some stuff has to get thrown out the window though. I also tried to standardize calling them Dark Elves instead of Drow partly because I feel like Drow has a much nastier sound to it and calling them Dark Elves follows the naming convention with the High and Wood Elves. I tried to model them after real-life matriarchal societies like the Mosuo people of China and their pantheon after real deities like the Greeks, Romans, and Norse. I also quickly realized that building a society is inseparable from geography. Where a people are from effects their language, values, mythology, history, and family structure. I've tried to outline details I think are necessary to making this society realistic while leaving it open ended enough to be place-able in different worlds with relative ease. All that aside, lets get into the meat of it.

The Dark Elves: Elven Outcasts

The Elves are a varied and magical people that come from many planes and many environments within them. But none are met with more distrust and fear than the Dark Elves. Easily set apart from their cousins by their charcoal or pitch-black skin, pink-red eyes, hair of grays and whites, and shorter stature, these people have earned a reputation as killers, thieves, demon worshipers, and liars. But history is a cruel mistress, something the Dark Elves know better than most.

The Divine Divide

As the legends go, when the world was still young, Corellon Larethian lived on the Plane of Arvandor with his fellow Primal Elves. They were wild and mutable, emotional and free in all things. They changed shapes at will, gave and took freely to and from the world, and never stayed in any location too long. They wandered to and fro, scattering their peoples across almost every plane. However, this unbridled freedom was not without a price. Arguments, feuds, and small scale wars were incredibly common between them. Some elves would find themselves stranded on far off planes after most of their companions impulsively decided to leave. Their self serving impulses drove them to often completely disregard the needs or wants of others if they went against their own desires. And their reckless revelry was wreaking havoc on the natural world with Elven parties decimating whole planes of edible plants, wild game, and drinkable water.
One such Primal Elf began to see the destruction of their ways and talked to other elves about their actions. Slowly, this Elf by the name of Lolth amassed a small following of devotees that saw the negative ramifications of their inconsiderate freedom. Lolth and her followers agreed to take on fixed forms to show recognition of the dangers that impulsivity could bring. Lolth led this small group of devotees to Corellon to ask for his support. Now, Corellon did not lead these Primal Elves: he was just as wild as the best of them and did not take kindly to others telling him what to do. But he was the First Elf ever born and was universally respected amongst the Primal Elves and if Lolth could convince him, others would surely follow. Corellon listened to her proposition and agreed that they should change to prevent more destruction and conflict, but refused to order his kinsfolk into any action. He was an Elf, same as all of them, and he wouldn’t dare order around his family. He balked when Lolth asked him to take a concrete form as a show of solidarity and brushed her off as a killjoy.
Lolth was unsatisfied with this outcome and her following set out to convince each Elf to change their ways to preserve the beauty of the worlds. However, without the support of Corellon, many elves refused her offer. Her anger grew with each failure and her opinion of Corellon turned sour, something she made no attempt to hide from her Elven siblings. Now, Corellon is a proud god and once he caught wind that Lolth was bad mouthing him in an attempt to win over others, he became enraged. He railed against Lolth calling her a snake-tongued thief and Lolth called him incompetent and cruel. Their tempers flared and all the elves chose sides between Corellon’s freedom and Lolth’s stability. During this great debate, the Primal Elves turned to violence. The Dark Elves maintain that Corellon’s side threw the first blow, while the High Elves claim that it came from Lolth’s side.
No matter the source, this violent outburst soured relations between Lolth and Corellon forever after. He cast her and her followers out of Arvandor and barred her from ever returning. He also cast all but his most trusted kin from Arvandor, forcing them all to live lives on other worlds out of fear of another perceived insurrection. Thus, the Seldarine remain in Arvandor to judge the souls of Corellon’s faithful when they die and Lolth takes refuge in Arcadia with her pantheon where she minds the souls of the Drow. Corellon’s faithful call her pantheon the Dark Seldarine, while her faithful call it the Myrkalfar.

Myrkalfar: The Spider Mother’s House

Lolth the Spider Queen is the unquestioned head of the Myrkalfar, with all other deities seen as her divine family. Lolth is considered at times to be fickle or even cruel, but her ire is never gained without good reason. A very involved deity, her followers constantly search for signs of her favor or scorn in everyday life. When a Dark Elf contemplates a risky or controversial decision, they consult priestesses or perform their own rites which often gives them direct and succinct answers. She serves as an example to matriarchs of Drow families as demanding yet understanding, punishing yet guiding. She asks for a lot of her priestesses, demanding they be an unflinching example of everything a strong leader should be. The Myrkalfar is often presented as a divine household, with Lolth as the matron.
Keptolo is the consort of Lolth and considered to be the ideal of what a male should be. Beautiful and kind, strong and hard working, he helps Lolth in everything she does. Sometimes he serves as a messenger, other times as an agent of redemption, sometimes as a divine healer. When a Dark Elf is tasked with a divine charge, he is usually the one to deliver the message and guide them through their charge. He serves also as a fertility deity and is often worshiped by women or men seeking a child. Outsiders see him as a weak and subservient husband to Lolth, but his faithfulness to his matron is considered a virtue and his status as a “husband” is relatively alien to the Dark Elves as they have no binding marriage in their society.
If Keptolo is the agent of Lolth’s mercy, Kiaransalee is the agent of her vengeance. She is the eldest daughter of Lolth and Keptolo and one that Dark Elves pray to when they feel wronged. Only the most binding and serious contracts are signed under her name. To break an oath made under her name is sure to bring destruction. She is also the governor of the dead, judging the souls of those passed in the afterlife. She opposes the mindless undead created by mortals, but spirits and revenants that return to finish unresolved business amongst the living are considered under her protection. Should a Dark Elf encounter a returned spirit that is seeking vengeance, it’s their duty to leave them on their way and pray that the spirit isn’t there for them. This reverence of certain undead is something many outsiders consider downright evil.
Selvetarm is the Dark Elven warrior goddess and youngest daughter of Lolth. Often depicted with eight arms, she represents the pinnacle of hand to hand martial prowess, but often is without restraint. She serves as both an inspiration for warriors, and a warning. Vhaeraun is the eldest son of Lolth and governs ambition and stealth. Both of these traits are not necessarily vilified, but worship of him is highly scrutinized. Haughty and rash, tales of him often include deceiving his fellow gods for good and ill and more often than not are cautionary ones. He’s depicted as wearing a mask, either as some punishment for endangering Lolth and her family or to hide his identity for various schemes, possibly both.
Malyk is Lolth’s youngest son and a youthful deity of change and growth. He’s often seen as a bouncing young boy that Lolth and her family have to reign in from wild misadventures. His freedom and curiosity is often seen as a double edged sword, both gaining him great riches but also putting him in tremendous peril. He has strong ties to sorcerers and when a child is born with innate magical talent, he is often the one thanked for it. He serves as an outlet for a Dark Elves youthful chaotic nature, but also warns them of the ramifications of their actions.
Ghaunadur is a strange figure in the pantheon. Their place in the family is a bit of a mystery, sometimes called the sibling of Lolth, or her child, or even as Lolth’s parent. What makes them truly unique is that they are a formless deity, something that Lolth once warred with Corellon over. The legends go that when Ghaunadur joined Lolth, they refused to give up their changeable nature. When questioned, Ghaunadur pointed to the slimes, oozes, and formless creatures of the world and said that they wished to protect them from the Elves and the Elves from them. Lolth agreed, cementing their position as the deity of the changing forms of nature. Their favored creature is the ooze, but they govern all natural creatures. Dark Elves often pray to Ghaunadur to protect them from the creatures that lurk in the depths of the forest.
Zinzerena is Lolth’s sister and is the goddess of poisons, illusions, and magic. Viewed as an elderly and patient figure, she often serves as council to Lolth in desperate times. She’s said to be the mother of all poisons and venoms and her teachings are all about finding the wisest solution to a problem. Zinzerena teaches that even though the spider is small, it’s bite can still fell a panther. Despite her perceived age, she’s considered the younger sister of Lolth and is thought to be incredibly quick and nimble: a reminder that not everything is as it seems.
Eilistraee is Lolth’s niece and daughter of Zinzerena. Considered the black sheep of the pantheon, she serves as a goddess of redemption and moonlight. Dark Elves that turn their back on their family or scorn traditions will sometimes find themselves turned to Driders, half-spider half-Dark Elf creatures shunned by all. Eilistraee is said to watch over these creatures and if they are repentant, offer them challenges that they could complete to redeem themselves. Lolth often views her with contempt or mistrust, but never hates her and maintains her place in the pantheon. Dark Elven faithful rarely worship her as the others. She’s also one of the only deities of the Myrkalfar to claim no animosity toward the Seldarine and their faithful.
Spiders are the sacred animal of Lolth and are often used as an example of social order and the importance of family bonds. Each strand of silk serves the web as whole. More literally, the giant spiders of the Underdark are multifaceted and incredibly useful creatures. Serving as beasts of burden, war steeds, meat producers, household guardians, and silk producers, they are present in almost every facet of society. Their silks are used in everything from wound dressings to armor to architecture. To kill or steal another family's spider is considered akin to stealing a member of the family. Smaller and more poisonous spiders are often kept in temples and their webs are used as divining tools for priestesses.

Elven Exiles

The recorded history of the Dark Elves is full of contradictions from High Elf and Dark Elf sources. What historians can agree on is when the Elves of the Prime Material arrived, the followers of Lolth secluded from their Wood and High cousins and retreated into the Azelarien, also known as the Green Sea in Common. A massive forest, nearly 1 million square miles of dense and vibrant trees, that grows denser and darker the farther in one ventures. For countless eons, the High, Wood, and Dark Elves lived in relative harmony in their own corner of the world. High Elves lived near the forests in towns and villages, the Wood Elves lived in the lightly forested outlands of the Green Sea, and the Dark Elves lived deep in the central forests which was so dense that very little light reached the forest floor.
As time passed and their villages turned to cities, the High Elves began expanding into the forest, chopping some down to build homes and heat their furnaces. This began pushing into the territory of the Wood Elves and eventually the Dark Elves as well. These two peoples formed a shaky alliance to push back the expansive tide of the far larger High Elven armies. This alliance proved successful however and the High Elven forces began losing ground. What happened next is a matter of some debate. High Elven historians attest that the Dark Elven armies used Wood Elven soldiers as unwitting bait to lure the High Elven armies into a trap, thus causing a schism between them. Dark Elven historians state that the Wood Elven armies turned on them after the Wood Elves met in secret with High Elven leaders and bargained for their independence. Some Wood Elven historians claim that after a brutal defeat on the field, they were met by High Elven dignitaries that offered them clemency if they turned on their allies. They initially refused, but after the dignitaries threatened to make the same offer to the Dark Elves, they had no choice but to accept. No matter the cause, the histories agree that the Wood Elves turned on their erstwhile allies and helped push the Dark Elves into a rapid loss of ground.
Facing the might of the two armies with their own relatively small one, the Dark Elves were beaten into a hasty retreat into their own territory. Losing every open encounter, the Dark Elf matrons developed a new strategy of combat. The armies switched from training as many as quickly as they could, to training only a select few in multiple different forms of combat and magic. As the High and Wood Elves advanced into their territory, they quickly found their supply lines cut out from under them, their soldiers ambushed while sleeping, their scouts captured, and their leaders assassinated. And even if they would make it to a Dark Elf settlement, they would find it abandoned and booby-trapped, warned by their fast and silent scouts. If the Dark Elves couldn’t face their enemies head-on, they would weaken them with quick and decisive strikes.
Eventually, the war ground to a stalemate. The High Elves couldn’t push into the Dark Elf territory far enough to capture any cities of note without taking severe casualties and the Dark Elves were only managing to hold the invading armies back and couldn’t muster a force strong enough to push back to the enemy capital. Thus, the war cooled into a tense peace. The leaders came together to draw borders, but neither side fully forgave nor forgot one another’s actions. High and Wood Elves viewed the change in tactics by the Dark Elves as an unethical violation of the standards of war. The Dark Elves felt a particular animosity toward the Wood Elves, considering them backstabbers in their darkest hour.

Dark Elf Families: Matrons of Order

The Dark Elf society, to an outsider, looks like an oppressive and cruel society of slave traders and backstabbers. But the truth is more subtle. The Dark Elves value tradition and filial piety above almost all else. To a Dark Elven citizen, their family name is their most valuable possession and they are taught from a very young age that to look after their parents and their younger siblings is the highest virtue. Ancestors that have achieved great things often have shrines in a household alongside the gods themselves. A Dark Elf going against the will of their family is considered one of the highest taboos and often causes them to be outcast from Dark Elven society as a whole. Dark Elf society is matrilineal meaning that the eldest woman in each family is revered as the household leader and receives great respect from her family and society. This also means that the males of the society don’t inherit wealth as frequently as the females.
Dark Elven families are quite large, often with multiple generations along with aunts, uncles, and cousins living in the same household. New children almost always reside with their mother. Males of the society are expected to care not for their own biological children, but for the children born to their sisters, aunts, or nieces. This results in a striking amount of sexual freedom for both men and women, but is often viewed from the outside as promiscuity. The Dark Elves do not marry in the traditional sense, instead favoring long term partners with one another that can end at any time with no concerns to material wealth or ownership.
However, to become a member of a Dark Elf family is not entirely a matter of heritage. When a family that cannot support another child has one, they are often adopted by more well to do families and raised as one of their own. These adopted children are considered just as legitimate as if they were born into the family. Also, should a family lose all their heirs or become destitute, they often ask to become assimilated into other families for their own safety. The latter is considered a morose ceremony as the members of the smaller family forsake their surnames. To take in such a family is both an extreme honor and grim burden, as it means ending another family's line.
The borders of Dark Elven civilization only goes so far as there are trees so many newer up and coming families have expanded underground, a difficult and slow endeavor. This has put multiple houses at odds with one another for territory. However, Dark Elves do not tolerate open hostility between families as they have a very strong sense of collective identity. Dark Elves do not war against fellow Dark Elves, same as a spider does not fight its own web. This leads to many tensions and conflicts needing to be resolved in other ways. Most families will attempt a diplomatic solution, but when that isn’t an option, sabotage and coercion is the favored outlet. Murder is considered a bridge too far by most houses, but subterfuge in almost every other facet is, while not accepted, tolerated.
Legends of Lolth’s rebellion and the tension of their enclosed territory have imbued the Dark Elves with a strong sense of symbiosis with nature and conservancy. Sustainable living is the cornerstone of Dark Elf society. In the wild, no creature is killed or plant destroyed unless it’s a matter of self defense or necessary to survival.

Dark Elven Sex and Gender

As with many Elven peoples, sexuality is seen as a fluid and non-binary matter. Same sex relationships are usually seen as just as acceptable as male-female relationships. Since Dark Elves have no marriage structure, same sex life partners are common and widely accepted. Inheritance is passed along by the family as a whole, not linearly, meaning some houses may have matrons with no direct biological descendants while still serving at the elder matron. Power dynamics in relationships are still a factor, with the elder female in a gay relationship considered slightly above their partner socially and is seen as the inheritor in cases of property or genealogy. Male same sex relationships are accepted with little controversy. Since children are passed down their mothers line, the males have no social obligation to sire an heir as with other societies.
Transgender and transexual Dark Elves are met with slightly more controversy. Lolth’s rejection of the Primal Elves mutable forms is sometimes cited against transgender and transexual Dark Elves. Ghaunadur, however, is considered the patron god of these people and teaches that just as they are part of nature, they can change their forms. Many of these people join the religious order of Ghaunadur, serving in various roles both in religious ceremonies and as forest guides. Some even consider them to be blessed by Ghaunadur and are highly sought after in forays into the forests for protection. Children born to transgender Dark Elves are still expected to be a part of their eldest mother’s family or eldest father if no woman is part of the union.

Slavery Amongst the Dark Elves

While the Dark Elves do take slaves, their slavery doesn’t look the same as many other societies. When a family becomes indebted to another and they cannot pay off the debt, a member of their family, usually male, will be sent to work for the owed family. They give him room and board and are expected to care for him as if he were one of their own. He’ll work for them for an agreed upon amount of time before returning to his native family. Injury or misuse of this person is often grounds for them to leave and the debt to be nullified. Children born to servant fathers needn’t worry about inheriting their father’s status since they’re considered to be their mother’s child. On the rare occasion that a female servant has a child while in servitude, the child is returned to the mother’s family to be raised by her family while she works off the remaining debt. Some trade of servants does occur between houses, with indentured servants being traded for goods or services or even other servants of special skills, but the family of the servant reserves the right to veto such a trade for any reason.
During their frequent clashes with external armies, the Dark Elves do sometimes take prisoners of war, though very rarely are they used for slave labor. They never bring them back to major settlements, often keeping them on the outskirts of their territory to prevent them from learning critical knowledge of their territory. Most prisoners are held as bargaining chips to be traded for passage, supplies, or captured Dark Elves. Captured military leaders are sometimes brought to Dark Elven cities to be tried for their crimes against their people.

Dark Elven Government: Independent Houses

Unlike many other cultures, the Dark Elves lack a centralized government. Societal etiquette govern the standard for how certain crimes and disagreements should be handled, but each family unit acts as its own governing body. Disagreements within families are thus resolved internally. Inter-family disputes are resolved in multiple different ways. Most often, the two matrons of the family will meet and agree on terms to fairly compensate both sides. In cases when these talks deteriorate, the High Priestess of Lolth is often called to serve as the mediator and serves as the ruling body between disputes. Her rulings are final and indisputable, as she is considered the mouthpiece of Lolth’s will.
In times of crisis, historically the many houses of the Dark Elves have convened to discuss threats to all of Dark Elven society. This is uncommon as it’s difficult logistically to gather all the matrons in the same place at the same time, so often houses are represented by either the second eldest woman of the family or the eldest daughter of the matron. The High Priestess of Lolth often resides over these meetings as an arbiter in the event of split decisions or in delivering guidance from Lolth herself.

There's my take on the Dark Elves. Any comments, suggestions, questions, outrages, and critiques are welcomed. This is my first comprehensive look at a whole race so if I've missed things, I'll try and patch them up. I'd like to do similar things for Orcs, Goblinoids, Kobolds, and others so those might be seen soon. Thanks!

SCAM BROKERS EXPOSED

If any of the following happened to you, you are probably the victim of a trading scam:
* Firstly, has your account manager convinced you to start small with a deposit of 250 (Euros, Pounds, or Dollars)? Did he then show you on the trading platform that your initial investment has now grown to 1000 in a single week (or something like that)?
* Secondly, were you looking to invest in Forex, Binary Option or Cryptocurrency? Did your broker tell you that you can become rich trading just a few hours a week?
* Maybe you are already making tons of money on their trading platform and yet they persuade you to keep putting more money. When you to attempted to make a withdrawal, did they convince you and pressure you to leave the money in?
* Did your broker provide a very insecure password to your new trading account like 123456?
* Finally, does your company charge zero fees to make trades for you. If you answered yes to one or more of the above questions, there is a really good chance that you are indeed a trading scam victim. All of the above are key indicators that you have been the victim of an online trading scam. Why? Because A, there is no investment opportunity under the sun that can make a 300x return in a week. B, it is impossible for a juvenile investor with no prior trading experience to become rich with just a few hours of work in a week. C, no legitimate brokerage would try and prevent you from making a withdrawal. It is your money! D, no professional trading company would put their customers’ money at risk by providing an insecure password like 123456. And E, how does your broker make money if he doesn’t charge fees unless he is scamming you? Mass Effect: Andromeda Story Rewrite

So, Mass Effect: Andromeda...

Disappointed would be a very good start to describe just how I felt about the whole game and its potential. Having replayed it to the point where I got the platinum trophy and nearly a level eighty Ryder, I feel like the game itself is good and fun. The new combat feels far more fluid and is a significant change to the corridor shooters of Mass Effect 2 and 3 and the addition of the jet pack was definitely fun for when I wanted my BroRyder to look like Tony Stark and my FemRyder to look like... Well, Toni Stark I guess. The new powers were fun and the way you could chain combos together really made you feel like you were commanding the team and the wins of the group were due to you and your tactical mind something I felt was missing for Shepard's combos.

The big point I think we were missing with Andromeda was the story though. The main group of characters were fine and they could all compliment one another and your Ryder but I feel like they could have been more. If we use Mass Effect 1 as an example, we have a group of six soldiers for squad mates and out of those six, four of them are aliens and brand new characters and people for us to discover as we played the game. So, with Andromeda, we got a similar squad size but out of the six, we only get one new race to fully explore. This is the first big thing I would change in the game and the way it is set up, the only thing I would change with the main game, and what is coming up in the story, (Ooh spoilers!) is that I would ditch Liam, purely because I like him the least, and add in a kett companion.

Crazy idea right? But no more crazy than adding a geth into Shepard's suicide squad in my opinion.

I actually think the starting point of Andromeda, strange faces and all, is really good. I love how the Arks look and the lived in, Star Trek type feel that it shows off. The sibling being taken out of the game right away is also a really fun point that instantly humanises your Ryder and gets you into their shoes. I mean, I can't imagine what it would be like having any of my brothers be stuck in a coma but I'm sure I would be a total mess and we need to see that be more of a deal for Ryder because I feel like in the main game everything just sort of falls into place as a set of lucky coincidences and as soon as the human Ark docks with the Nexus we don't see our new Citadel in the beat up shape it was in when it first arrived and the lights are on and all of the systems are working again.

I think seeing a beat up Nexus would be a good, interesting point especially if you levelling the Nexus up could actually affect the game and story. This is something I always enjoy doing in games myself and seeing it be a thing in my game would really make me happy. Imagine levelling the military aspect of the Andromeda Initiative and when you next dock the Tempest, there are more armed guards littered around the Nexus, or you put some points into the merchants and trading deals and inside the main lobby of the Nexus you can see more stalls popping up and offering you more things to spend your hard plundered credits on.

Back to the story, I think the first couple of missions with the Ark and then landing on Habitat 7 were really fun but this was where the first story misstep happened. I, personally, would keep SAM being able to help fix the remnant tech and help bring the viability of a damaged planet as a thing but I would also give it more of a consequence. The kickback won't be the cause of death for Alec Ryder but it will break his back and put him in the state where Alec Ryder has to transfer the rites of Human Pathfinder to his son/daughter and the player character. Cora, will stay the same as she is, annoyed at the fact that she was passed up but eventually will grow to accept that Alec was right to give the title to Scott/Sara and she worked a lot better as the second in command.

So, after dealing with Habitat 7 and arriving at the broken down Nexus, Alec Ryder and Scott/Sara Ryder are introduced to the main characters of the Nexus, Addison's tired face is probably not going to be a thing though. Sorry memers. Once that is through, we have something of an idea that the possible liveable worlds do exist out there and the possibility of the Initiative doing something now that they are in Andromeda and now they can live somewhere inside of Heleus. I would also use this point to ensure that the game only takes place inside of the Heleus Cluster and there will be no jumping from system to system.

I get why they decided to give us an entire new galaxy to explore but inside of this galaxy there are only three other new species to discover? That seems very unlikely to me personally. We could go one of two ways here in saying that there was some sort of galactic genocide that wiped out most of the life in Heleus but I think that sounds a lot like the Reapers and with what I'm planning, we already have another nod towards the original trilogy so let's go with the second option and just lock the first game of Andromeda into one single solar system and maybe give it a second sun to make it look more science fiction-ey.

So, while the planets Eos, Voeld, Havarl and all the other planets you needed to hit 100% viability on will basically have the same story, the main story missions like the Archon's ship and hitting the centre on Voeld will be significantly different. I think one of the issues I had with the game was just how quickly the game adapted to humanity and the rest of the milky way inhabitants got to be in control and be such a big part of Heleus and as invaders essentially, we should be treated with significant caution.

So, one of the big points I'd make with Andromeda, since we're only dealing with the Milky Way aliens and then the additions of the two Andromeda species in the kett and angara we should really focus on those last two and make a big deal with them. I would use the mission on Voeld with the kett holding centre being the main launching point for the big point for the story. At this point in the main game, Jaal, or whoever is the angaran squad member, will be forced to be a part of Ryder's team to assault the centre. This is going to be important later. The mission plays off as it does in the main game, complete with the team finding out that the kett are genetically modified angara and that is why the kett are stealing angarans and also why several Milky Way species have gone missing as well.

The team gets to the end of the centre and having kicked the crap out of the Cardinal in the exaltation facility, we get a lovely little exposition chat from him but we get one important detail.

Cardinal: Tell me Pathfinder, just what have the angaran told you about our war?
Ryder: They told me enough. They told me that you are bullies, picking on them because they weren't interested in fighting back.
Cardinal: Is that what they said? Let me tell you-

The Cardinal is then shot through the head by an off screen gun, the camera reveals that the shot was fired by the Moshae who has a knowing look on her face. She lowers the gun and greets Jaal and the Pathfinder, the team leave the exaltation facility, bombing the whole place or leaving it up so that the Milky Way can offer more good faith in ferrying out the mind wiped angaran and other species who were ready for the exaltation process.

The story moves on to Havarl with the intention to clean it up and free it so that the angaran can move back there as well as using Aya as their species capital. Moving through the planet and doing plenty of side missions such as finding the lead on the turian ark and whatever, the final big mission on Havarl is an encounter with a huge team of Kett soldiers, I'm thinking a massive fortress type of thing. As you clean through the fortress, you find that the leader of the building has vanished and you are left with a computer and one blinking light. Activating the console, you find that the kett have left you an AI message that offers up some very interesting details involving the angara and kett. The information suggests that the angara and kett used to be very close and the whole reason why so many of them are so closely related. The kett are suggesting that the angara have a secret that they don't want to let out into the galaxy because they are ashamed of it.

Taking the information back, Ryder and the team discuss what the next plan is when Kallo lets Ryder know that they have a waiting video-call. Ryder dismisses the team, or rather, they dismiss themselves, and Ryder takes the call. Looking at the screen, Ryder is amazed to see the Archon himself looking at them. They have a conversation and the Archon lets Ryder know that he wants to discuss peace terms with the Moshae but he wants to make sure that things are legitimate. So, he is sending over one of his own people who can be picked up at a certain location. Picking up the kett squad member, the tension between the kett and the angaran squad member should come off as very obvious.

Moving on to Elaadaan or Kadara, there are a couple more missions before the big story mission comes up. The kett and angara have decided on a location for the possible peace talks and they want it on neutral ground. The Nexus. Ryder and the Tempest return and we can already see that the Nexus is starting to look more alive and as they disembark, they are greeted by Alec Ryder who is in a sort of Christopher Pike style wheelchair but he has a smile on his face at least. The two walk together and towards the elevator that will take them to the peace talks room near the bottom of the space station and as they move, Alec talks about how he failed the Ryder siblings and how he was so focused on saving their mother, he completely ignored his children. He basically apologises and says he is so proud of the Ryder Pathfinder. Ryder has the dialogue wheel choice that probably looks something like this.

[Humour] I guess this is a good time to ask if we can go trick or treating then?
[Good] Thanks dad, I appreciate it.
[Heart] I love you dad.
[Anger] Little late for twenty six years dad.

When the Ryders get to the peace talks, they can see that the angaran and kett are already spending their time scowling at each other and skulking up and down the long conference table and not threatening each other but they might as well be. When the Ryders arrive, the conference gets going and progress starts to be made right up until one of the kett mentions the two coming together again.

The peace talks start to break down, angry words start to be exchanged and while Alec tries to calm them down, one of the angaran breaks out a weapon that they smuggled into the talks and opens fire on the kett. Killing the entire kett peace talks team as well as wounding the Archon, the angara are ready to wipe them out completely when the Archon speaks. His head rolls to the side and he looks over to Ryder, his eyes wet and tears streaking down his cheeks as he coughs and splutters.

Archon: Ryder... We are guilty of the crimes they have accused us of. We only did it though because of what they did to us. All we wanted was to live, we wanted to please our masters and serve them. All we wanted was for them to be happy and to let us live. Our people worked to put them on the pedestal they believed they should be on and when they changed their minds, they tried to execute us. Our scientists found a way to make their dead work for us. The angara glassed our home world, they shot our children in their nests and they murdered our elderly and infirm. What the angara did to us was not an act of war, it was a massacre. So, we defiled their dead and it changed the war. It made us stronger and we were able to fight back. Those cowards realised that the war was changing and started to give worlds up to us. Just in time for you to arrive and fight their war for them. Ryder, please, I beg you... If I do die here at least make sure that my people live. Do not buy into their lies any more.

So, a little bit of a copy from Vegeta’s confession in the Frieza saga of Dragon Ball Z, and by a little bit, I of course mean a total copy. It’s not my stuff admittedly, but I think it could be an interesting take on the whole classic angle of ‘We hate these people because of reason x, y or z’.

So, with that revelation, Ryder is left on the Tempest with the crew assembled and the kett and angaran squadmates being kept apart by force if necessary but there is definite tension in the air and the two are staring daggers at each other. Here, Ryder really starts to stand out as a leader of their people and makes sure that both members of the team are aware that if they are going to be staying on the Tempest they have to behave themselves. As the discussion is sort of stalling, Kallo lets the Pathfinder know that there is a message coming through from the kett command. Ryder dismisses the crew and takes the call, it’s then that Ryder finds out that the kett are going to be moving together to take the

Binary choices:
The first outpost on Eos Military or Scientific?
Siding with the kett or angara?
Killing the other alien member of the team or letting them live?
Who do you take to the bone zone?
How does the galaxy look when the final fight is over? Are we setting up a democratic union or is Heleus in need of an iron hand?
Does the Nexus accept the survivors of the angara or kett with regards to an embassy or are they to stay in orbit of the station?

DLC

Because this is EA we're talking about so of course they’re going to monetise my thoughts.

£3.99/$4.99 Pack #1: Ryder Snr's training wheels programme
A short pack with this one, a new set of weapons, an armour kit and a fun new member of the squad in your sibling joining the team. This will be a series of horde mode where you get a ranking based on how you, and your team, does in the challenge. If you manage to reach level twenty or hit a specific points threshold then you will be granted the rank of N7, just like Alec Ryder and you get another feather in your cap as well. This could be played at any real point in the game but would only activate after both the angaran and kett join the team.

£7.99/$9.99 Pack #2: Two minutes to midnight
So the first story pack. This is going to expand the story on what's been happening with the remnant, where they went and what they were doing. The story comes out that the vaults are all linked for one specific reason and while they can transform a planet into a brand new, liveable biome, they can also destroy. SAM has been working on some specific algorithms with some of the brightest minds on the Nexus and they have worked out that there is a countdown and it is coming sooner than any of them would want. With a new moon area to discover, the team find out that the countdown is leading to the return of an alien race that wishes to reset anything that is incorrect in Heleus. Incorrect such as five planets being terraformed to a brand new setting. This would really lead to Andromeda 2 and the arrival of what could be the Andromeda equivalent of the Reapers and gives everything in Heleus something new to want to kill. There wouldn't be any new weapons with this pack, maybe add some remnant gear in to spruce it up though. This would be played, ideally, just before the final encounter though could also be played any other time too.

£7.99/$9.99 Pack #3: The final piece
The DLC we all thought we were going to get. I would lead with there being geth stowaways on board and that was what set off the fights on the ark. When we receive the news of the ark, we only know that the ship is in trouble. So, the crew dock with the ark, get the news that there are geth stowaways and maybe add some batarians or vorcha in so the team has something else to kill. One other point I would make about this DLC is that we actually get a canonised face for the quarians. Make up some scientific mumbo jumbo about the time spent travelling to Heleus has strengthened their immune system or something. This is the only other DLC that I would put some choices involved in.

Do you:
Use stun rounds and move forward non-lethally or use full force?
Let the troublemakers stay or do you exile them?

Okay... So this is definitely a lot longer than I thought it was going to be. I guess let me know what you think, whether you agree, whether you would change something or if you just wanted to chat about Mass Effect Andromeda too I would be more than happy to discuss it!

Weekly news review (November 16-22)

Weekly news review (November 16-22)
Hello, everyone! Happy Monday! Let's dive into last week's news highlights ;)
https://preview.redd.it/9aogvhaket041.png?width=1200&format=png&auto=webp&s=1d4bc9b6c06f1864aaa9aa50deb1c251f0d629f4
Earlier on Thursday, the National Assembly's Amendment Subcommittee on Parliamentary Affairs passed a legal amendment to the still-in-development Special Financial Transactions Information Act to force virtual asset exchanges to register with the Financial Services Commission (FSC). Those failing to do so would face up to five years in prison or a fine of up to 50 million won ($42,460).
Under the amendment, aimed to align the industry with international anti-money laundering guidance from FATF, crypto exchanges must also have so-called real name virtual bank accounts – sub accounts for users within an exchange's primary account – to avoid falling foul of the legislation.
Opposition lawmakers had expressed concerns that that exchanges without real-name virtual accounts would be forced to close, bringing further contraction of the domestic cryptocurrency industry.

Someone hacked the official website of the Monero cryptocurrency project and quietly replaced legitimate Linux and Windows binaries available for download with malicious versions designed to steal funds from users' wallets. The latest supply-chain cyberattack was revealed on Monday after a Monero user spotted that the cryptographic hash for binaries he downloaded from the official site didn't match the hashes listed on it.
At this moment, it's unclear how attackers managed to compromise the Monero website and how many users have been affected and lost their digital funds.

Having dropped to one-month lows below $8,000, bitcoin is now eyeing the first test of a key average support, now at $7,714, since April.
The top cryptocurrency by market value fell more than 2.4 percent in the 60 minutes to 08:00 UTC on Thursday to hit a low of $7,875 – a level last seen on Oct. 25, according to Bitstamp data. The drop marked a downside break of a 48-hour narrowing price range seen above $8,000.
Notably, with a slide to levels below $7,900, bitcoin has erased 80 percent of the rally from $7,293 to $10,350 seen in the second half of October.
On a month-to-date basis, the cryptocurrency is now reporting a loss of over 13 percent. Further, the cryptocurrency is trading in the red for the fourth straight week.
The dismal performance contradicts the positive seasonality factor: bitcoin has put on a good show in November in six out of the last eight years. Notably, prices gained for six straight years in November, starting from 2012 to 2017, before falling hard in November 2018.

The United Kingdom Jurisdiction Taskforce of the Lawtech Delivery Panel published a statement concerning the status of cryptocurrencies, distributed ledger technology (DLT) and smart contracts under English and Welsh private law.
U.K. entrepreneur network Tech Nation announced the paper’s publication on Nov. 18. The document attempts to address the legal uncertainties of cryptocurrency and recognizes crypto assets as tradeable property and smart contracts as enforceable agreements under local law.
Lawtech Delivery Panel director Jenifer Swallow noted that the worldwide smart contract market is expected to reach $300 million by 2023 while the World Economic Forum predicts that one-tenth of the global GDP will be stored on a blockchain by 2027. Due to this, she thinks adapting regulations on these new technologies is particularly important.

Institutional investors are aware of the risks that come with allocating a large percentage of their funds to a particular asset or market indices. For one, the downturn of such a market or asset would have a crippling effect on their returns. The same is true for investors that allocate the majority of their portfolio to asset classes that have strong correlations to one another. Hence, adopting a strategy that allows the allocation of funds to different asset classes, with little or no correlation, is the appropriate solution. This is where Bitcoin excels.
While other markets had moderate correlations to one or two traditional asset classes, Bitcoin maintained a very weak correlation to all of the asset classes examined. In other words, Bitcoin could fit nicely into an investment portfolio and boost returns.
VanEck’s study went further to prove Bitcoin’s eligibility as an investment option. This investigation entailed the assessment of the asymmetric return of portfolios allocated to varying percentages of equities, bonds and Bitcoin from January 2012 to July 2019. A portfolio with 58.5% of the fund distributed to equities, 38.5% to bonds and 0.5% to Bitcoin generated returns that surpassed that of a portfolio allocated solely to the S&P 500 by over 150% as of July 2019.

Joe Walsh Will Not Save Us (G-File)

Dear Reader (including the poor Biden staffers who have to white-knuckle their armrests when not sucking down unfiltered Marlboros every time Joe Biden gives an interview),
If you’ve never heard the Milton Friedman shovels and spoons story, you will (and I don’t just mean here). Because everyone on the right tells some version of it at some point. The other Uncle Miltie (i.e., not the epically endowed comedic genius) goes to Asia or Africa or South America and is taken on a tour of some public works project in a developing country. Hundreds of laborers are digging with shovels. Milton asks the official in charge something like, “Why use shovels when earth moving equipment would be so much more efficient?”
The official replies that this is a jobs program and using shovels creates more jobs.
Friedman guffaws and asks, “In that case: Why not use spoons?”
The story might not be true, but the insight is timeless.
Here’s another story: When I was in college, we were debating in intro to philosophy the differences between treating men and women “equally” versus treating them the “same.” At first blush, the two things sound synonymous, but they’re not (indeed the difference illuminates the chasm of difference between classical liberalism and socialism, but that’s a topic for another day). I pointed out that there were some firefighter programs that had different physical requirements for male applicants and female ones (this was before it was particularly controversial—outside discussions of Foucault—to assume there were clear differences between sexes). Female applicants had to complete an obstacle course carrying a 100-pound dummy, but men had to carry a 200-pound dummy, or something like that. A puckish freshperson named Jonah Goldberg said: “I don’t really care if a firefighter is a man, a woman, or a gorilla, I’d just like them to be able to rescue me from a fire.”
A woman sitting in front of me wheeled around and womansplained to me that “you can always just hire two women.”
I shot back something like, “You could also hire 17 midgets, that’s not the point.”
(I apologize for using the word midget, which wasn’t on the proscribed terms list at the time.)
But here’s the thing: Sometimes it is the point. Whether you’re talking about spoons or little people, the case for efficiency is just one case among many. Don’t get me wrong, I think it’s an important one, but it’s not the only one. Sometimes older children are told to bring their little brothers or sisters along on some trip. They’ll complain, “But they’ll just slow us down!” or, “But they aren’t allowed on the big kid rides.” Parents understand the point, but they are not prioritizing efficiency over love. Or, they’re prioritizing a different efficiency: Not being stuck with a little kid who’s crying all day because he or she was left behind.
One of my favorite scenes in the movie Searching for Bobby Fischer is when the chess tutor Bruce Pandolfini, played by Ben Kingsley, tells the chess prodigy’s parents that they have to forbid their son from playing pickup chess in the park because he learns bad chess habits there. The mom says “Not playing in the park would kill him. He loves it.”
Kingsley replies, accurately, that it “just makes my job harder.”
And the mom says, “Then your job is harder.”
I love that. I love it precisely because it recognizes that good parents recognize that there are trade-offs in life and that the best option isn’t always the most efficient one.
This is one of those places where you can see how wisdom and expertise can diverge from one another.
The Unity of Goodness
Efficiency can mean different things in different contexts. In business, it means profit maximization (or cost reduction, which is often the same thing). In sports, it means winning. Always giving the ball to the best player annoys the other players who want their own shot at glory, but so long as he can be counted on to score, most coaches will err on the side of winning. Starting one-legged players will wildly improve a basketball team’s diversity score, but it’s unlikely to improve the score that matters to coaches—or fans.
I’ve long argued that there’s something in the progressive mind that dislikes this whole line of thinking. They often tend to find the idea of trade-offs to be immoral or offensive. I call it the “unity of goodness” worldview. Once you develop an ear for it, you can hear it everywhere. “I refuse to believe that economic growth has to come at the expense of the environment.” “There’s no downside to putting women in combat.” “I don’t want to live in a society where families have to choose between X and Y,” or “I for one reject the idea that we have to sacrifice security for freedom—or freedom for security.” Both Bill Clinton and Barack Obama were masters at declaring that all hard choices were “false choices”—as if only mean-spirited people would say you can’t have your cake and eat it too.
Saint Greta
Nowhere is this mindset more on display in environmentalism. Everyone hawking the Green New Deal insists that it’s win-win all the way down. It’s Bastiat’s broken window parable on an industrialized scale. Spending trillions to switch to less efficient forms of energy will boost economic growth and create jobs, they insist. I’d have much more respect for these arguments if they simply acknowledged that doing a fraction of what they want will come at considerable cost.
Consider Greta Thunberg, the latest child redeemer of the climate change movement. She hates planes because they spew CO2. That’s why she sailed from Sweden to a conference in New York. As symbolism, it worked, at least for the people who already agree with her. But in economic terms, she might as well have raised the Spoon Banner off the main mast of her multi-million-dollar craft (that may have a minimal carbon footprint now, but required an enormous carbon down-payment to create). The organizers of this stunt had to fly two people to New York to bring the ship back across the Atlantic. And scores of reporters flew across the Atlantic to cover her heroic act of self-denial. Her nautical virtue signaling came at a price.
The organizers insist that they will buy carbon offsets to compensate for the damage done. But that’s just clever accounting. The cost is still real. And that’s not the only cost. It took her fifteen days to get to America. In other words, she actually proved the point of many of her critics. Fossil fuels come with costs all their own—geopolitical, environmental, etc.—but the upside of those downsides is far greater efficiency. If you want to get across the Atlantic in seven hours instead of two weeks, you need fossil fuels. The efficiency of modern technology reduces costs by giving human beings more time to do other stuff.
The Conservative Planners
The unity of goodness mindset has been spreading to the right these days as well. The new conservative critics of the free market see the efficiency of the market as a threat to other good things. And they’re right, as Joseph Schumpeter explained decades ago. For instance, just as earth-moving equipment replaces ditch-diggers in the name of efficiency, robots replace crane operators, and the communities that depended on those jobs often suffer as a result.
I have no quarrel with this observation. My problem is with the way they either sell their program as cost-free, or pretend that the right experts can run things better from Washington. They know which jobs or industries need the state to protect them from the market. They know how to run Facebook or Google to improve the Gross National Virtue Index. Many of the same people who once chuckled at the Spoons story now nod sagely. I don’t mean to say that there’s no room for government to regulate economic affairs. But I am at a loss as to why I should suspend my skepticism for right-wingers when they work from the same assumptions of the left-wingers I’ve been arguing with for decades.
Embracing Trumpism to Own Trump
Instead I want—or I guess need—to talk about another trade-off. I’ve been very reluctant to weigh in on the Joe Walsh project for a bunch of reasons. The biggest is that I am friends with some of the people cheering it on. But I think I have to offer my take.
I don’t get it.
Oh, I certainly understand the desire to see a primary challenger to Trump. I share that desire. And I understand the political calculation behind the effort. It’s like when one little league team brings in some dismayingly brawny and hirsute player from Costa Rica as a ringer. The other teams feel like they have to get their own 22-year-olds with photoshopped birth certificates in order to compete. My friend Bill Kristol is convinced that Trump must be defeated and that Walsh is just the mongoose to take on the Cobra-in-Chief.
I try not to recycle metaphors or analogies too much, but this seems like another example of a Col. Nicholson move. As I’ve written before, Col. Nicholson was the Alec Guinness character in The Bridge Over the River Kwai. The commanding officer of a contingent of mostly British POWs being held by the Japanese, Nicholson at first follows the rules and refuses to cooperate with his captors in their effort to use British captives as slave labor for a bridge project. But then his pride kicks in and he decides he will show the Japanese what real soldiering is like, agreeing to build the bridge as a demonstration of British superiority in civil engineering. [Spoiler alert] It’s only at the end of the film that he realizes that building the bridge may have been a kind of short-sighted moral victory, but in reality he was helping the Japanese kill allied troops because the bridge was going to be used for shipping Japanese troops and ammunition. When this realization finally arrives, he exclaims, “My God, what have I done?”
Walsh’s primary brief against Trump is that Trump is temperamentally unfit for office and a con man. Fair enough. But he has to focus his indictment on Trump’s erratic behavior. Why? Because he’s a terrible spokesman for much of the rest of the case against Trump. I may not call myself “Never Trump” any more, but I was in 2016. And back then, the argument against Trump wasn’t simply that he was erratic. It was also that he wasn’t a conservative, that he happily dabbled in racism and bigotry, and that he was crude, ill-informed, and narcissistically incapable of putting his personal interests and ego aside for the good of the country. I’m sure I’m leaving a few other things out. But you get the point.
Walsh may be sincere in his remorse over all the racist and incendiary things he said in the very recent past. He may regret supporting his anti-Semitic friend Paul Nehlen, though I haven’t found evidence of that. But none of that history should be seen as qualifications for the presidency, the Republican nomination, or support from conservatives.
And yet, it is precisely these things that make him attractive to his conservative supporters. Trump is an entertainer who trolls his enemies with offensive statements for attention, so let’s find someone who does the exact same thing!
Walsh may have been a one-term congressman, but his true vocation was as a shock-jock trolling provocateur. It’s ironic. As I’ve argued countless times, much of Trump’s bigotry in 2016 stemmed less from any core convictions than from a deep belief that the GOP’s base voters were bigoted and he needed to feed them red meat. Trump's reluctance to repudiate David Duke derived primarily from his ridiculous assumption that Duke had a large constituency he didn’t want to offend. He may have believed the Birther stuff, but he peddled it because that’s what his fans wanted. And Joe Walsh was one of those fans.
It may also be true that Walsh never really believed most of the bilge he was peddling and that he was doing the same thing Trump did—feeding the trolls—on a smaller scale. But if that’s the case, then he’s a con man, too.
I don’t want to beat up on Walsh too much because, again, his epiphany may be sincere. There are lots of people who pushed certain arguments too far only to recognize that the payoff was Trump and the transformation of conservatism into a form of right-wing identity politics. There are a lot of Col. Nicholsons out there. And I have too much respect for Bill Kristol to believe that he would lend his support to someone he believed to be as bigoted as the man Walsh seemed to be a few years ago.
But from where I sit, the prize we should keep our eyes on isn’t defeating Trump; it’s keeping conservatism from succumbing to Trumpism after he’s gone. This isn’t easy, and no tactic is guaranteed to be successful. We’ve never been here before. My own approach is to agree with Trump policies when I think they’re right—judges, buying Greenland, etc.—and disagreeing when they’re wrong. My own crutch is to simply tell the truth as I see it, regardless of whether it fits into some larger political agenda or strategy. Truth is always a legitimate defense of any statement.
But for those who see themselves as political players as well as public intellectuals, I think this is a terrible mistake. Intellectually and morally, the case for continued opposition to—or skepticism about, Trump cannot—or rather must not—be reduced to simple Trump hatred. But by rallying around Walsh—instead of, say, Mark Sanford, or Justin Amash, or, heh, General Mattis—that’s what it looks like. Because you can’t say, “I’m standing on principle in my opposition to a bigoted troll and con man as the leader of my party and my country and that’s why I am supporting a less successful bigoted troll and con man for president.” Walsh isn’t a conservative alternative to Trump; he’s an alternative version of Trump. And his candidacy only makes sense if you take the “binary choice” and “Flight 93” logic of 2016 and cast Trump in the role of Hillary.
Let’s imagine the Walsh gambit works beyond anyone’s dreams and Joe Walsh ends up getting the GOP nomination (a fairly ludicrous thought experiment, I know). If so, I have no doubt that my friend Bill Kristol will say, a la Col. Nicholson, “My God, what have I done.”
Various & Sundry
Canine Update: It’s good to be home. The beasts were delighted to see us. Everything is settling back to normal, except for one intriguing development. I think Zoë has finally had enough with Pippa’s tennis ball routine. The other day on the midday walk with the pack, Kirsten managed to film Zoë putting an end to the tennis ball shenanigans. She took the ball and buried it. It was, to use an inapt phrase, a baller move—and she was unapologetic about it. Maybe she just didn’t like all the commotion with the other dogs, because she’s tolerant of the tennis ball stuff again. Or maybe she was being protective of her sister given that many of the other dogs in the pack are known thieves. Regardless, they’re doing well and having fun.
If you haven’t tuned into The Remnant lately, please give it another try. The first episode of the week was with Niall Ferguson and the feedback has been great. The latest episode is with my friend and AEI colleague Adam White on all things constitutional. Word of mouth is really important in building up audiences, so if you can spread the word about The Remnant or this “news”letter, I’d be grateful.

Riot's "Sandbox Mode" reply makes it obvious how little they seem to understand the competitive setting of their game.

The second is that players want to practice very specific skills without the constraints of a regular game. For this point, our stance is that sandbox mode is not the way to go. We want to make sure we’re clear: playing games of League of Legends should be the unequivocal best way for a player to improve. While there are very real skills one can develop in a hyperbolic time chamber, we never want that to be an expectation added onto an already high barrier to entry.
To put it mildly: What a crock of shit.
I'm guessing that in Riot's world learning to play football means only playing entire 90 minute matches. Learning to play Basketball? Only 4 quarters of 5 x 5. Learning to play Street Fighter? No training mode for you son, straight to ranked! Learning CS:GO? Full ranked matches only. No practice matches, no practicing your spray, nothing - full games or bust!
Pick ANY competitive game of any kind and it should be obvious the incredibly ignominious status of that statement. I can't believe any sane person would honestly argument that wanting to practice and improve a specific part of any game should never be acceptable, and that the only way to improve should be to play the full game. That someone connected to one of the currently most popular competitive games in the world thinks this is troubling to say the least.
I'll go one step further: A "sandbox" or "training" mode would be a million times better and more relevant practice than playing AI.
Playing AI teaches you nothing but bad habits which come from playing against an adversary that, due to its very nature, will never "play the player" - and a particularly dumb one at that. Even if you improved your bots immensely, short of creating actual artificial intelligence, you'll never create bots that act like players - ANY players, be them good or bad. You create poor facsimiles, nothing but sad uncanny-valley homunculi that only appear human on the most shallow of surfaces. A big part of LoL (or any "PvP" competitive setting) is playing the player, learning to predict, counter and even manipulate their actions, and preventing the same from happening to you. Even the best of current game AIs can't do that. They can do mathematical calculations and run down pre-defined courses of action. They're not capable of creative action or "yomi". And that's a BEST case scenario. The bots you have have now are the incredibly dumb kind that only get harder by cheating - magically getting better items regardless of gold, "aimbotting", seeing you through the fog of war...etc. You're not playing League of Legends against those bots.
The lack of a training or sandbox mode of some kind has been a huge failure for LoL, and a positive point for the competition. Both HotS and SMITE, for example, feature some form of practice mode - which should be embarrassing to you. Both of the "new kids" (comparatively to you) have figured this shit out that far before you? It's not like we're asking for something incredibly complex - A mode with a few simple extra options inside a 1-vs-1 AI mode would not be perfect, but it would be a massive improvement over the nothing we have:
There ya go. Don't tell me that's difficult to do. You don't even have SMITE's issue of being 3D (and thus requiring physical in-game interfaces), you can do the same as HotS and just have some small buttons on the top of the HUD... That alone would be enough to let people practice their combos, their skillshots, test different setups... Outside of setting up a match and waiting 5 minutes to try anything with a flash.
And don't give me this...
the risk of Sandbox mode ‘grinding’ becoming an expectation
...particular brand of bullshit. You're expected to not suck shit in any game mode already, by exactly the same people that would expect you not to be a gigantic turd if the training mode existed. People who would rage then rage now. Should we disable casuals/non-ranked because you're expected to learn there before jumping on ranked? Should we disable ARAM or Dominion because they're effectively not Summoner's Rift? The only difference that a training mode would make is that you would actually have the convenient tools to improve the aspects of your game you want to.
TL;DR: Riot's excuse is a pile of shit. The tools to improve specific parts of your game without having to play a "full game" should exist, as in every other competitive setting, and there is no legitimate reason not to have training mode any more than to remove AI games (in fact, AI games are worse as they only teach you bad habits).
Edit: Typos and such, also thanks for the gold kind stranger!
EDIT #2: Found a Riot reply among the thousands of comments. Sorry for the delay in "pinning" it here, but there are a lot of comments to sift through:
RiotBanksy
There's a lot of your argument that I agree with (especially this part)
>Don't tell me that's difficult to do.
And to make it clear we are not completely opposed to building systems to practice and improve at League. We think there is real player value in a some version of a training mode, especially when one considers the sometimes complex champions we introduce to League. Just as much as you, we understand League is a competitive game by design and, for most, best enjoyed as player vs. player. But for those who want to double down on their skills, League should provide avenue for them as well.
The blog's intent was to peel back the curtain and give you transparency into the trade offs we are making in development. We knew that some things we are (and aren't) doing wouldn't win us any popularity contests but imo talking about this stuff is better than turning a deaf ear to players. Our explanation on Sandbox is weak, straight up. We made it sound like a binary decision which it's not. The strength of the message (or lack therein) reflects the internal Riot debate about how to best solve the problem for players. I think our product, engineering, and design teams are fully capable of solving this in a innovative way that players can use. The unpopular thing is that it is not on the currently an item in development but based on this feedback it may be that's what we need to adjust.

Binary Options Strategy 2020 100% WIN GUARANTEED ... THE TRUTH ABOUT BINARY OPTIONS - YouTube Ultimate4Trading Review Scam or Legit Binary Options Trading Ep 141: Binary Options - Scam or Legit?

Scams are unfortunately all too common in the field of binary options. Dishonest brokers and reviews, or rigged robots and other auto trading services – the scams can come in many forms. Automated Trading software is a highly reliable and legitimate binary options trading software. I had recently invested my money into this trading platform and I earned a good amount of $500 within a period of week itself. A binary trading scam typically offers ‘instant money’ to potential clients using advertisements on social media. Because more and more people are carrying smartphones and are logging into various sites, getting their audience is easy. There are also binary option trading scams that have brokers who call and fake celebrity endorsements. Binaries themselves are perfectly legitimate, but steer clear of ‘instant money’ promises, brokers that cold call, and celebrity endorsements, plus any claims that you can ‘start trading binary options for free’.
